Kimberley Families - Introduction
It was the dream of James (Jim) Harley Robert Davis that a history book of Kimberley would some day be written. In the 1967 Canada Centennial Year, an effort was made to start the book, but to no avail. Again in 1971 when British Columbia commemorated its Centennial Year he tried to get a local writer interested in the book, but still without success. Jim then decided to contact all pioneers living in Kimberley and record their histories on tape until a book could be written.
In February of 1977, a representative from the New Horizons program from Vancouver, asked if there was any way to help the Senior Citizens of Kimberley. It was learned that many other places were recording their own histories and getting them published with the assistance of a Federal Grant through the New Horizons Committee.
Mr. Davis immediately formed a local New Horizons Committee to begin what he first thought would be a small but interesting history of the City.
With the co-operation of Grace Leighton, the two started out contacting and interviewing anyone that had been in the area for fifty years or more. As they went along, more names were added to the list until they realized that in no way could they contact everyone. Those who were approached and interviewed, did so willingly, and enthusiasm grew.
Our goal was to have the book on the market for Christmas, 1979. There was so very much to do and we knew so little about what to do. We could postpone the publishing and keep adding more personal histories, but we felt those we had contacted gave us an overall picture of the growth of the City.
We apologize to the many we have missed due to lack of time. The delay might gain more histories, but would the book ever go to press? Urgency dictates, while enthusiasm runs high, so we present you with this history as it is.
