Kimberley Families

The Searle Family
as told by son Fred

In the 1940's, Lloyd Searle moved to Kimberley where he worked in the mine. He met Alice Swann, a lifetime Kimberley resident that he married in 1947. They lived in the family home at 718 Lloyd Avenue which was on the border line between Lois Creek and Happy Valley.

After a few years they decided to build onto their Cominco built (Mickey Mouse) home which were so called because all the houses in the area had the same building plan. The larger home was built to house their five children.

Geoff who worked at the Iron Plant until he married Doreen Alton from Trail who he had met at Art School in Nelson then he moved to Langley BC where he still resides working at his own business Morgan Pottery.

The second son Fred worked at the Storage Plant which processed fertilizer until he was transferred to the Steel Plant. After quitting, Fred moved into the lumber industry working for Crestbrook Industries where he retired as the Quality Control Inspector. He was married twice, had five children Aimee, Shae, Delaney, Jesse and Alisha. Unfortunately Shae passed away 25 years ago due to complications from spina bifida. Delaney now lives in Kimberley. Fred still lives with his common law wife, Kathy in Cranbrook.

Laurie was the only girl in the family, she lives in Kamloops. Laurie is a retired nurse that worked at Royal Inland Hospital. She was married to Hans Uppenborn (deceased) and they had two children Damian and Lindsay.

Brian the third son resides in Creston. He was injured in a car accident when he was a teen which left him paralyzed from the chest down. He lives in an apartment which is built to accomadate his disability.

Lastly, the fourth son, Tom and his wife Lisa live at 405 5th Avenue. This house belonged to his grandmother, Maude Swann. Tom had three children Alison, Andrew and Hanna that live in Kimberley. Andrew now owns his grandmother Alice's house.

Kimberley holds a lot of good memories for each of the family members as they were surrounded by many aunts, uncles and cousins.
