Salute to Kimberley - Page 58

August

August 9 - the Caldwell Merchants fastball team downed the King Eddy from Cranbrook 7-2 to win the Bavarian City Classic tournament on the weekend.

August 10 - Fantastic and incredible is how Kimberley runner Mike Jones describes his experience at the VIII World Veteran's championships held in Eugene, Oregon. Jones came home with a silver metal in the Marathon Nation event.

August 14 - Yesterday's hailstorm and torrential downpour sent many scurrying indoors out of the way of the marble sized hailstones. The ensuring rains however, proved too much for a storm drain on 103rd Avenue and flooded the basement of Allen and Joan Haskell's house.

August 21 - The Kimberley Lions first annual Duck Race needed a front end loader to dump the 2,400 ducks into Mark Creek.

August 24 - Rower Nigel Mayes has come home to Kimberley to rest after a gruelling summer competing in the Canada Championship Regatta and the Canada Games.

August 25 - Jack Kavanagh, a man of funny stories of his life in sports writing in the East Kootenay last night had the tables turned on him when many of his friends showed up at the Kimberley Elks club to 'roast' him with tales of his own past.

1990 The year in review

Note: - I have no idea why The Bulletin would run what appears to be an op-ed by Henry Allen of the Washington Post for Kimberley's 1990 Year in Review, but since it has absolutely nothing to do with Kimberley, or Canada for that matter, I have decided to omit it.

1991 The year in review

In this, the second year of the last decade of the century the recession which had wrecked havoc throughout central Canada finally extend its grasp to Kimberley and the East Kootenay as two major employers struggled to balance the books.

But perhaps the big story in Kimberley this year was and still is the on-going saga of the sale of the properties on North Star Mountain.

A series of negotiations with a private Calgary firm, known as Diorite, led to a stalled ski hill deal towards the end of 1990. However, the City regrouped and on July 6, 1991 announced it had signed a "Letter of Intent" with Toshio Kawabe and T.K. Incorporated of Japan.

At that time Kawabe said the deal was probably worth $100 million. Included in this price is an undisclosed sum that was to be paid to the City of KSSR, the soon to be opened Trickle Creek golf course and a package of surrounding land. Also included in the deal is to be a commitment for commercial, residential and vacation facilities as well as the construction of a major four-season resort hotel.

The closing date has been set for spring 1992.

However due to a number of circumstances, some rumored to be financial, and others tied into the on-going development proposal, the Letter of Intent has been extended.

Kawabe did come to town early in December. At that time, the City granted him an extension on the closing date. Originally scheduled for April, 1992, the new date has been set as November 30, 1992.
