July

July 4 - In anticipation of a fall election, Sid Parker and the Kootenay East New Democrats were first out of the starting blocks as they launched their election campaign with the opening of their constituency office.
July 11 - The Kimberley Oldtime Accordion championships get better and better every year as they had more entrants than they could handle this year.
July 18 - Numbers were up and all events well attended at Julyfest 88 celebrations held last weekend.

August

August 8 - A little groggy from only arriving in Kimberley the night before but excited about where they were, seven Ecuadorians and seven Canadians were officially welcomed to Kimberley.
August 9- Kimberley city council appointed 11 people to sit on the Indoor Pool Committee which will examine the possibility and feasibility of constructing an indoor pool in Kimberley.
August 11 - Songfest 88 is underway. Outdoor concerts in the Platzl began yesterday and continue today as Kimberley's third annual gospel music festival reaches its midway point.

September

September 2 - Mike Downing, Cameron Bone11, Andrew Pearson, Helen McKinlay and Alice Hayer were presented with Kimberley school district scholarships.
September 3 - Close to 150 spectators were on hand at Rotary Park to watch the Sullivan Hotel Jets win the Kimberley Gopher Fastball League championship with a 7-3 win over the Greens.

October

October 12 - City council approved a comprehensive indoor pool committee report recommending a final professional cost analysis be done which would lead to a spring referendum on the issue.
October 18 - Alderman Stan Wilson, a veteran of 20 years on Kimberley city council, has announced he will not seek re-election.

November

November 1 - Retiree Sonny Nomland will run for mayor against incumbent mayor Jim Ogilvie, who is seeking his ninth consecutive term as mayor.
November 21 - All of the incumbents were returned to office in Saturday's civic and school trustee elections.
November 22 - Kootenay East swung back into New Democratic Party hands last night as Sid Parker defeated incumbent Conservative MP Stan Graham by more than 1300 votes.

December 6 - Kimberley's 'volunteer extraordinaire', Frank Goodwin, was honored last night before swearing in ceremonies for council, school board, and Bavarian Society members.

April

April 20 - the good old days are gone Mick Henningson, general manager of Cominco's Kimberley Operations told Rotary Club members at a luncheon yesterday.
April 25 - The 26th conference of the British Columbia Council of the Confederation of Canadian Unions was held at the Kimbrook Inn on Friday.

May

May 2 - Grade 12 student Ryan Barnhardt will leave on Sunday a week long 'Adventure in Citizenship' in Ottawa as a guest of the Ottawa Rotary Club.
May 3 - The search for mineral ore in the East Kootenay continues as Kokanee Explorations will soon be drilling exploratory holes in the Peavine Road area near Moyie Lake.
May 4 - Kimberley's boxing sensation Kevin Lyons continues to sine as he recently added the provincial senior (156 pounds) title to his impressive list of accomplishments.
May 9- Kimberley taxpayers will see their municipal taxes increase by five per cent his year as the city strives to maintain current service levels in light of increased labor and material costs.
May 10 - Kimberley taxpayers will be paying 13.4 per cent more in school taxes this year as the school board has adopted its 1989-90 budget of $10,518,134.
May 12 - The Rocky Mountain Sports Academy is getting too big for its britches, or at least too big to be run strictly by volunteers. The Academy directors are now looking for a paid part time coordinator to help administer and organize the various programs.
May 17 - An uneven reduction in the residential assessment rolls in Kimberley will hit some homeowners very hard this year as taxes, in some cases, may jump by as much as 50 per cent.
May 17 - Winners of the Giegerich Shield and best team trophy in the East Kootenay Mine Rescue competitions were Dale Craig, Dave Varty, Pete Longston, Terry Elsdon, Steve Arbuckle, and Maurice Meagher.
May 24 - The Selkirk Secondary School senior girls 4x100 relay team shattered a 14 year record at the East Kootenay Track and Field championships. Members of the winning tam include Brenda Clarricoates, Jennifer Johnstone, Julie-Ann Davies, and Patti Perkinson.
May 30 - Kimberley teams cleaned up at the East Kootenay Mine Rescue and Industrial Safety Associations 68th annual competitions in Fernie.

June

June 2 - A spirit of cooperation and a desire to work together was evident last night as the Kimberley Merchants Association re-organized itself and became a working entity once again.
June 6 - Gerry White of Cranbrook, won the Wood Vallance golf tournament, held at the Kimberley Golf Course, in an extra hole playoff over Bill Payne.
June 9 - Nearly two years of hoping, meeting, planning, arguing, convincing, praying, and sweating have come to an end, now the work begins. Kimberley's application for Community Futures funding to help with the construction of a golf course was approved yesterday.
June 19 - Nurses at the Kimberley District Hospital remain out on picket lines today after going out on strike Saturday.
June 20 - About 600 Kimberley residents last night gave their approval to Option 8 as the solution to the city's problems created by uneven assessment reductions.
June 21 - Columbia River MLA Duane Crandall and Bavarian Society president Esther Ulleday cut the ribbon Monday afternoon to officially open the city's Travel Infocentre at the Station building.
June 27 - In order not to create 'bad law' local Steelworkers are dropping their appeal of an Unemployment Insurance Commission decision to deny benefits to members during the 1987 strike.
June 28 - If everything goes right the T-bar at the Kimberley Ski and Summer Resort could be replaced with a triple chairlift by this fall.

July

July 7 - Cominco has cancelled plans to build a 4130 million expansion of its zinc smelter at Trail, citing a dispute with the provincial government over water charges.

July 17 - Despite heavy rain Thursday afternoon and a hailstorm Saturday afternoon that sent many scurrying to roll up car windows, the weather was near perfect for Julyfest 89.

July 27 - An agreement in principle has been reached between a Calgary based exploration company and a Pacific Rim Feldspar mining Company, opening the way for feldspar to be mined at Hellroaring Creek near St. Marys Lake.

July 28 - Kimberley Seahorse Swimmers Bridget Hamacher, Pam Forsyth, and Jolene Kadin brought home 12 medals from the B.C. Summer Games.
