The 1986 civic election promised a hot and heavy campaign but it became somewhat subdued with the late October announcement that the fertilizer operation would be shut down.
There was one real issue and that was the continued effort to locate new industry for the community to save the community from the day when the Sullivan Mine would be no more.
The city has had committees in place making this search, and the council itself had been making a serious attempt at attracting new economic development.
The voters heartily endorsed what was taking place, and returned two incumbent aldermen, Jack Ratcliffe and Stan Wilson. They also reelected Jim Ogilvie as mayor and put in Glen McKenzie as the new alderman.
The nuclear referendum passed by a vote of almost three to one in the November 15 election.
Efforts continued behind the scenes, and they included an application to Victoria to host the B.C. Festival of the Arts, and a decision was made to set up a mass series of meetings in the new year involving all of Kimberley's economic committees, to review the path being taken.
And, the ski season arrived.
The city experienced a superb start to the winter, with early and ample snowfall.
The cross country trails were widened and improved, and ready by mid-November, and by December 7, the Kimberley Ski Resort opened under its new ownership, which was the community.
A couple of small companies opened the eyes of local residents amid the gloomy news from Cominco.
One of them, a Calgary based outfit, said there would be a new mine producing feldspar south of St. Mary's Lake in the spring, and a Vancouver based resource company started a drilling program eight miles north of Kimberley looking for a new iron ore deposit.
An old issue came back again to be dealt with. The Woods Corner connection to the Kimberley-Cranbrook airport was a popular item with the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce, but it received mixed reactions here.
The Christmas season eventually arrived, ushered in this time with a singing Christmas tree stage in the Platzl, that was used several times during the month by local choirs.
The Rocky Mountain Visitors Association held its annual general meeting and plans called for an expansion of the advertising programs that had proven so successful over the past 12 months.
The RMVA, which promotes the region far and wide, is a member of the Partners in Tourism program, which is jointly financed by the Ministry of Tourism and the result of this big budget promotion has meant a significant increase in visitor packages for the coming season.

But as the end of the year approached, and many of our citizens took part in special events, we realized that 1986 was a particularly busy year for the Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank.
The food bank is a product of the times, one that is difficult to accept. However, its presence made an impact on the community, and drew it together more than at any time in its recent history.
The United Steelworkers and Cominco are a long way off from reaching a new labor agreement if initial proposals are any indication.

Community leaders in Kimberley are Concerned about the effects a prolonged strike against Cominco would have and hope the stoppage is a short one.
