Kimberley garbage bylaw furor
It began with a small item other detailed information put out by the city explaining the need for the change.The council had to save money it said again and again, but again and again many residents said no way.
Finally, the Mayor promised to change the plan and after the election, the city council examined another option that would permit a three day continuous pick-up and abandoning the added day system. \
The end to the debate had to come eventually, but the issue was with us for a long, long time.

Changes on city council: 1982 elections
The civic election in Kimberley was notable for several reasons. It provided a forum for residents' complaints about garbage and other concerns, it had a crowd of people running for office and the school board for a change had a full slate.
When the smoke cleared there were two new faces on council Jack Ratcliffe and Ron McPhee with Stan Wilson the only incumbent re-elected.
Veteran Jim Dickens was defeated but the eyebrow raiser was the strong showing of the challenger Don Torgeson to sitting Mayor James Ogilvie.
On the school board, candidate Shirlea Durston, inspired by a challenge from the board at a public meeting concerning the planned closure of Watkins school, won, as did rural candidate Ken McRae Sr., Frank Hollick and Sharon Malmberg were defeated.
Gretzky: Canadian of the year
Wayne Gretzky has even managed to outscore the economy, taking top spot as the news event of 1982.Newspaper and radio editors across the country have named Gretzky, Canadian of the Year, selecting him as the most newsworthy Canadian in 1982.
In recent weeks Gretzky also has been named Canada's male athlete of the year, and Sports Illustrated's sportsman of the year.
The accolades for the 21-year-old hockey player from Brantford, Ont., are recognition of his impact on Canada's national sport. Last season he won his second straight National Hockey League scoring title, amassing totals undreamed of in the past - 92 goals, 120 assists, 212 points.
He now owns or shares 27 NHL records and recently scored at least a point in 30 consecutive games.
Bad economic news dominated 1982 but the editors of members of The Canadian Press and its affiliate Broadcast News selected Gretzky as the top news-maker, narrowly ahead of Laurie Skreslet, the first Canadian to stand atop Mount Everest.
1983 Platzl facelift building of tourist railway
City of Kimberley underwent an impressive change in 1983 when the Platzl was rebricked. The sidewalks along Wallinger Avenue to Mark Street also were rebuilt.
It was a year of rebuilding and of construction of the tourist loop line railway system on the North Star Mountain near the Happy Hans Campgrounds which in future, is expected to boost the city's tourism potential.
Several meetings took place early this year to finalize plans for the bricking. The idea had been kicking around for nearly two years and when a joint agreement on financing was reached, the work was scheduled to begin in the late summer.
The Kimberley Downtown Merchants Association was the spearhead of the project, which called for a new Platzl design featuring red decorative brick and some new permanent facilities.
Cooperating in the venture were the merchants, the Bavarian Society, City of Kimberley and the Provincial Government.
In April came the good news that a government grant was provided so that the tourist railway with a mining theme could be built.
The grant - a federal one - and designed by the feds and B.C. government authorities provided summer jobs for unemployed people. They got the track of the loop line built.
The track covered 2 1/2 kilometres and late in the year, the locomotives were lowered on to it.
Meanwhile work progressed this year on construction of the Matthew Creek water supply for Marysville. Though the winter could not be beaten in completing it, residents were assured they would have good water come April.
