Honorary pallbearers were Wm. Barr, Creston, Harold Bennett and Jim Wheaton, Cranbrook, Percy Mellor, Gus Scholund and Sud Smith Kimberley. Active pallbearers - C.D.M. Chisholm, Don Jackson, Kimberley, Geo. Hunter, Herb Roberts, Geo. Quick and J.C. Hart, Marysville.
Interment was in the family plot, Marysville Cemetery, where Mr. Keer was laid beside his wife, the late Laura Keer, who predeceased her husband, in September, 1948.
Mr. Keer was born March 17th, 1865 at Parham Hall, Franilingham, Suffolk, England, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Keer, (the former Mary Walker). He came to Canada first in 1885 as a young man to settle in Winnipeg where he worked as a teamster for the C.P.R. in the Lake of the Woods District. Manitoba was suffering from depression, so this young man pushed further west to Revelstoke in 1892 and then on to Sprouttes Landing and the Nelson area where he worked on railway construction. He returned to Winnipeg where he worked for four years before venturing west again in 1896. He travelled west from Fort Macleod to Fort Steele on horseback. Here he took up his work as teamster hauling ore from the North Star Mine in Kimberley to Fort Steele, where it was shipped by boat to Billings and Kalispell, Montana. In those days the warehouse and loading platform for the North Star ore was in the vicinity of the present Kimberley Legion building.
It was here that Ben Keer met Laura Campbell, a governess at the North Star Mine, who he married in March 1901, at Lacombe, Alberta. They had two sons and two daughters - Madge, Mrs. Harold Bidder, Chapman Camp, the eldest was the first child born at the old Top Mine.
Mr. Keer worked at the smelter in Marysville during its duration, about 1903- 1907. He also took seasonal work at the Lucky Boy and Ethel mines in the West Kootenay. In 1910 Mr. and Mrs. Keer started the Marysville Dairy, which they operated until 1925 when it was taken over by Cominco. They moved then to the Keer ranch on the St. Marys Lake Road, where Mr. Keer lived until three years ago when he moved to Marysville. In the fall of 1960 he entered the Dr. Green Memorial Home in Cranbrook, where he became a great favorite with the staff.
Mr. Keer loved life and people, but his hobby was his love for flowers and his garden. He is survived by two sons Allan and Warren, both of Marysville, and two daughters, Mrs. Harold Bidder of Chapman Camp and Dot, Mrs. Hagen Bernsten, Vancouver, B.C.
Out of town mourners attending the funeral included: Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Barr and Mr. Albert Johnstone, Creston; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bennett, Cranbrook; Mrs. Ralph Knickerbocker, Calgary; Miss Ida Gainache and other staff members from the Dr. Green Home and friends from the immediate district.
As most of you know, the firearms display has been set up in the Hudson's Bay window. We hope that you will take time to look at it, for these are all guns which have been involved in accidents. As this display is part of our Firearms Safety Program, we urge you to note and check when you are handling firearms. Conservation Officer Gus Seaton has shown this display to the local Junior Forest Wardens and we will have it set up at the Big Game Competition on February 1st. Mr. Fabro has kindly donated one of his display windows at Marshall Wells Store for us to set up the big game display this year.
In an effort to improve attendance at meetings it was decided that any member missing three consecutive meetings without a valid excuse will have his name removed from the mailing list.
Members are reminded they must have their dues paid at the next meeting if they intend to participate in the small bore program.
The person who left his scissors at the last meeting may pick them up at 670 Rotary Drive or else phone 427-3446.
We were very pleased to receive a letter from Jack Leggett, a past president, thanking us for the briefcase we sent him as a gift. Jack is attending Notre Dame University at Nelson.
