The C.P.R. are donating a locomotive bell for Kimberley's Ski School. This bell will be of historic value, now that diesel units have replaced the old steam locomotive.
Both bells and the old steam engines are much in demand by museums, Historic Societies and parks. Kimberley Ski Club are quite fortunate to have received this donation from the C.P.R.
More than 75 High School Counsellors from all parts of B.C. will attend a four-day seminar at the University of British Columbia April 5 to 8.
The seminar, supported by a grant from the International Nickel Company of Canada, is sponsored by UBC's counselling office and faculty of education and the department of education.
Attending the seminar from the East Kootenay will be Miss Ruth Soderholm, Kimberley High School; Mr. Paul Zubick, Mt. Baker Jr. Senior High, Cranbrook and Mr. B. Moore, Prince Charles Jr. Senior High, Creston.
Invitations have been extended to counsellors in each school district and all lower mainland schools. Purpose of the conference is to improve liaison between UBC and counsellors and to provide them with full information about the university.
President N.A.M. MacKenzie will open the seminar at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5th. This will be followed by a panel discussion on the university student who fails. The panel will discuss the reasons and remedies for failure and identification of such students.
At noon the same day in UBC's faculty club Dean S.N.F. Chant will discuss the Royal Commission on education and, following the luncheon, the commission's recommendations regarding counselling will be discussed by a panel of UBC and High School teachers.
On subsequent days the UBC program and the training and development of counsellors will he discussed.
Guest speaker on Friday, April 7 will be Dr. Edwin Schneidman, a noted vocational counsellor.
Kimberley shares pride with Mgr. John D. Cowan as the Kimbrook Motor Hotel officially opens its doors to the public on Friday, May 25th.
His Worship Mayor c. Swan will officiate at the 2 o'clock ribbon cutting ceremony to which the public are cordially invited. From then to 6 p.m. visitors are welcome to explore the many facilities of Kimberley's newest hotel.
As you enter Kimberley from the south on Highway 93-95, the welcoming lights of the Kimbrook greet you from a picturesque setting of stately pines. The wide entrance and exit driveways and spacious parking facilities completely surrounding the hotel add to the convenience and comfort of guests.
Mr. John D. "Jack" Cowan, Mgr., Mrs. Cowan, Assistant Mgr., Receptionists Mrs. Isobel McIntyre and Mrs. Katie Pohl, Allan Hendren, Chef and Bar Manager John Burns, who accompanied the Cowan's from their Simon Fraser Hotel in Prince George, will be on hand to welcome you at all times. They will be assisted by a staff who have been selected from local personnel to ensure that your stay in Kimberley is a pleasant interlude. Winter protected parking for eight customer cars at the hotel rear offers another convenient feature.
Mr. Cowan says that future plans, and no one can determine how distant in the future, will encompass a swimming pool at the rear of the hotel, acreage is also available for added expansion as required.
Muted tones have been used throughout with soft lighting, wall to wall carpeting, Kroehler furnishings, private bath in all rooms, of which there are thirty-one, exclusive of the Managerial Suite.
P.B. Ford and Company were the Contractors for this fine new hotel and the John H. Hansen Co. of Vancouver, the Architects. Both gentlemen will be in for the opening on Friday.
City Council took time out from their civic duties just prior to last nights council meeting to pay tribute to the Ina Hansen Rink of Kimberley, Canadian Curling Champions.
Mayor C. Swan in making the presentation thanked the champion foursome for bringing honor to Kimberley and congratulated them on their wonderful achievement.
Each member of the rink Ina Hansen, Ada Calles, Mae Shaw and Isobel Leith received individual plaques. The plaques crafted in walnut were approximately 7" x 1/4" and featured a colored photo of the team with their Diamond D Trophy to the left while on the right a golden figure of a curler is mounted on a protruding shelf which bears the inscription "Presented by the City of Kimberley to Dominion Lady Curling Champions 1962."
Council congratulated each member and in turn the team members extended their thanks and said it had been a wonderful experience for them.
