Mr. Stanley Nemrava reported on the Adaskin Concert, which was sponsored jointly by the Board of Trade and Lions Club. The concert was very successful, except financially.
New bus service planned
Mr. W. Miller, of the Star Stages was present and stated that he had applied for a franchise to operate a bus service between Cranbrook, Kimberley and Golden. The bus would meet trains at Golden and the journey to and from the coast and Calgary would be greatly reduced in time. Stops would also be made along the route for the convenience of passengers.
Following the discussion on the matter, the Board endorses the application for a franchise.
Work on Mark Creek
Chairman H.L. Abbott stated that no work on Mark Creek south of the city limits had been done to eliminate future floods. A letter will be sent to the Department of Public Works requesting that such work be done before higher water prevails.
$1,200.00 needed
IN regard to the estimated expenditures for the coming year, Finance chairman Mr. B. Robertson stated that the sum of $1,200.00 would be needed. The dues in Kimberley, he said are lower than in any other B.C. city. Following a discussion it was decided that dues for business houses be $15.00 a year, and for those not operating a business $5.00. A membership committee will be formed, and a canvasser for each district was favored.
Publicity booklet
It was decided to publish a booklet this year for the benefit of the many tourists coming through the city. The proposed book was outlined by Mr. R. Stephan, chairman of the Publicity Book. A total of 5,000 booklets will be printed and will be distributed to all tourist centres in Western Canada and United States. The book will comprise over 40 pages and will contain much valuable information regarding Kimberley and the Windermere Valley. Business houses throughout the district will be canvassed for advertising.
Snow plowing
It was pointed out that the snow had not been plowed out at the end of the city limits to the Black Bear Bridge and the chairman stated that this matter had already been reported to the Department of Public Works.
Films shown
At the conclusion of the meeting films were shown depicting scenes on the Banff and Jasper highways. They were extremely inspiring, and much enjoyed. They were shown by Mr. Les. Rimes and are loaned by the National Film Board.
The years pass quickly . . .
Within the next few months, modernization will remove another, shall we say "landmark," from our midst, when the C.P.R. ore train which has been running night and day between the mine and the concentrator for about a quarter of a century will become a memory. No more shall we hear the "huffing and puffing" of the locomotive as she draws her train of empty cars to the mine to be loaded with Sullivan ore. No longer the squeal of brakes and the familiar "caboose whistle" as the train, loaded with its valuable cargo, returns to the concentrator.
This change over to Electric Haulage and the disappearance of the C.P.R. ore train recalls to the old timer some memories of the days before the construction of the concentrator in 1922. In those days the train from Cranbrook would ply its way up to Kimberley with its string of ore dumps. The friendly greetings by the crews to the good folks that lived in the area by Taylor's Old Mill, and the response to the crews from those same folks, there was quite a spirit of comradeship there, which continued on up to the town itself and the mine.
Fred Genest would bring his train to a stop in a siding just below the station and run on up to the mine and hook on to a loaded train that had been prepared since the day before, as the ore came over the hill on the aerial tramway. Down from the mine they would come with squeeks and screeches that put the present day ore train to shame.
Then back up to the mine with the string of empties, then away with the ore train, the ore being moved all the way to Trail in those days.
Columns of detail could be written going away back to the construction of the rail line from Cranbrook, the days of the Marysville smelter, and so on.
Last discoverer of Sullivan Mine dies
Wallace C. Burchett, aged 82, one of the discoverers of the Sullivan Mine died suddenly at Spokane on Monday. As far as is known he is the last survivor of the four men who discovered the Sullivan Mine.Burchett, retired rancher, mining man and merchant, suffered a stroke in a Spokane hotel which had been his headquarters since his retirement about five years ago.
1949 Otto Skribe wins two ski championships
Splendid skiing now on North Star Hill
0. Skribe, H. Lindquist and J. Collins journeyed to Nelson to compete in a jumping tournament last weekend.
They reported a swell time, best for a long while, Otto Skribe took 1st place, Jack Collins 2nd and Art Grodski, of Nelson 3rd. This makes the second win for Skribe this season as the previous week he attained 1st place in jumping at the Banff Winter Carnival.
This coming weekend the North American Championships will be run off at Banff. Many of the crack European ski teams will be competing, a sight nearly every skier would give his best boots to see. We understand many from here will be going and some of these will compete.
