Servicemen thank Patriotic Society for parcels
Around 410 servicemen and women are home
At the monthly meeting of the Patriotic Society Board it was reported that parcels had been sent to all serving personnel
at home in Canada and overseas at a cost of $565 and many letters of thanks had been received stating that the parcels
were very welcome.
The souvenir plaques have now been distributed and nailed up on members' houses by the Scouts, but some members could not
be found owing to change of address. Any subscriber who has not received his plaque and desires one should apply to
Mr. Len Bondi! at the Company General Office or to Mr. Resker at the Anglican Church.
The annual general meeting of the Society will be held at the Armories on March 18th and a draft letter was discussed at
the meeting on which there is a ballot for members to sign as to the future of the Society, whether it should carry on for
a while longer or be turned into a Community Chest.
The subscription for the month amounted to over $1,000 and the usual grant of $500 was made to the work of the Red Cross
(now more active than ever in the war devastated lands). It was also decided to send smokes to the 110 men still overseas.
$67.00 was also granted to the Welcome Home Committee for the second welcome social and $11 for taxi service to Cranbrook
to meet returning men. About 410 Kimberley servicemen and women are now back.
So far only 59 ballots from returned people re the use of the $12,000 Rehabilitation Trust Fund have been received. It was
decided to make a special effort to obtain at least 60 per cent of the 600 votes which could be cast. Seven returned men
and women are to be asked to obtain more ballots from their comrades.
A grant of $250.00 was made to the United Allies Relief Fund.
Masonic social evening very enjoyable
A social evening was held in the Masonic Hall by members of the Masonic Lodge on March 20th. The evening was spent by
playing bridge and whist. The following were the winners of bridge: Mrs. Willis taking top honors for the ladies, and
Mr. McGillivray for the gents; Mrs. Ford received the consolation prize.
The whist prizes went: first to Mrs. Jones, while second prize was won by Mrs. Ellis, playing as a gentleman, and Mrs.
C. Duncan received the consolation prize.
At the conclusion of the games refreshments were served. Some very fine pictures
were also shown. This concluded the evening with a good time enjoyed by all.
Huge lemon grown in Kimberley
A lemon with diameters of 14 1-2 inches and 15 1-2 inches, weighing 22 ounces and grown here in Kimberley, was recently on
display in the Mark Creek Store. It was grown by Mr. Harry Hogarth.
And this is only part of the story: a dozen other lemons, almost as large, are in the process of ripening on the sturdy
little tree which stands 14 inches high and supports the heavy fruit until fully ripe.
The flavor of the lemons is excellent Mr. Hogarlh says, and they are all, as they ripen, used up in his home.
The tree grows and produces in the Model Room at the entrance to the Sullivan Mine.
Fatal high school accident takes life of student
Miss Dorothy Ardath Callaghan victim of chemistry class explosion
An explosion of undetermined origin occurred at the Kimberley High School on Monday afternoon. It resulted in the loss of
one young life and injuries to three others. Kimberley and district people received a profound shock when the sad news
was received and confirmed.
The accident occurred during a chemistry test which was being conducted by Mr. Sylvio Muraro. All that is known at present
is that an explosion occurred. Its result was the death of Miss Dorothy Ardath Callaghan, and injuries caused by flying
glass and burns to Mr. Muraro, the teacher; Dick Schulli and Arthur Christensen, pupils. The three latter were immediately
rushed to McDougall Hospital, where their painful injuries received attention. Details regarding what occurred prior to and
following the explosion will not he available until an inquest is held, which will be tomorrow, Friday, March 8th.
On Monday evening a coroner's jury consisting of Joseph Bell, foreman; L.W. Bonell, R.S. Ford, M. Garden, J. McFarlane
and J.J. O'Neill viewed the body and also visited the scene of the accident.
Dorothy Callaghan popular student
Dorothy Ardath Callaghan, the victim of the tragic accident, was a pupil of Grade XIII. She was a model student, ranking
high in her studies and her pleasant manner and cheery disposition won for her the friendship of both her fellow pupils
and teachers.
She is survived by her sorrowing parents, Mr. and Mrs. 0.P. Callaghan at Upper Blarchmont, and one elder sister, Mary Pearl,
also two aunts, Mrs. William Nyman of Rossland and Mrs. John Hendrickson of Butte, Mont.
She was 18 years of age and was born at Rossland on August 22, 1927. She came to Kimberley when three weeks old and
received her entire schooling here.
The funeral service will be held at the Undertaking Parlors this afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Rev. S.T. Galbraith of the United
Church, will officiate. She will be buried in the local cemetery.
1947 First home under wartime housing turned over
Mr. R.W. Ford receives keys in ceremony yesterday
Fifty members of the City Council, the C.M.&S. Company and the Board of Trade were present yesterday afternoon when the
first of the new wartime houses built under the Wartime Housing plan, was turned over to R.W. Ford, a returned army veteran.
In a brief ceremony, Ray Taylor, local superintendent of the contractors, Smith Bros. and Wilson, turned over the keys of
the new home to E. L. Kerr, of Winnipeg, a member of the Housing Corporation. Mr. Ken. then turned over the keys to
Mayor C. Swan of Kimberley, who in turn presented them to Mr. Ford.
Following the turning over of the house to Mr. Ford the guests were shown over three or four of the new houses.
All who saw them were pleased with the plans and the construction and the new area created by the new housing project will
prove a great asset to this East Kootenay City. Thirty-eight houses are now ready for occupancy.
Refreshments were served to the guests by Mr. Taylor following the inspection tour.
A total of 125 houses have been constructed in Kimberley under the Wartime Housing plan and the remainder will be
ready for occupancy in the immediate future.
