Charles Wormington appointed as photograph judge

Charles Wormington, well-known local photographer, has been appointed a judge for the second annual Kootenay Photographic Salon to be held in Trail under the auspices of the Trail Gyro Club, April 25 to 29, according to word received from J.C. Vipond of Trail, chairman of the Salon Committee. Other judges will be Fred Ransom of Trail and Arthur Turner of Rossland.

It is expected that many East Kootenay photographers will be entering their photographs in this year's Salon and entry forms for those interested in the photographic art may be obtained by writing to the Gyro Salon Committee, 815 Victoria Street, Trail.

An art exhibition will be held in conjunction with the photo salon, a special feature of which will be an art contest by school children.

Activities at Junior and Senior High School

Competitions are at a stand still at present due to the annual mid-term classification exams and units tests which are now in full swing. Sports take second rating on school nights as the students buckle down to solid work with recommendation or promotion in June as a reward. The exams are to end by the 24th of this month, to be graded for the reports which are due sometime in February.

Sports . . .

Checker tournaments have now drawn to a close. Final results have not yet been announced. Ping-pong is to start in February. This competition is a general favorite with the students and most of them take part.

Unfortunately no school badminton games have been planned this year because of the scarcity and high price of shuttles. It is hoped to continue this sport as soon as circumstances permit.

The ace High School hockey team who are still the proud holders of the Green Cup, are open to challenge for the cup again this year, but as yet have received no definite word on the matter.

The present House standings are: Green 1417; Gold 1920; Purple 1440; White 1890.

Cadets...

266 Sullivan Air Cadet Squadron
The squadron under the highly efficient command of F.O.R.C. Hermon, has once more resumed training after a brief stop over the holidays. Instruction is being given in Aircraft Recognition, Air Force Mathematics, Anti-gas, Internal Combustion Engines, Air force Drill and Signalling.

Most of the squadron will soon be wearing the St. John's Ambulance Badge, having acquired the Senior First Aid Certificate.

Three cadets, AC I Colin J. Evans, AC! John Banks and Sgt. Frank Holdsworth, are now enlisted members of the Royal Canadian Air Force. They have been given leave of absence until graduation from school this June.

No. 1758 Kimberley High School Division, Royal Canadian Army Cadets
Lieut.-Col. D.V. Brown is the officer-in-command of the Kimberley Battalion this year, with Major R. Adams, second-in-command. Promises of good showing in the annual inspection this year looks very hopeful, since the arrival of uniforms and better equipment.

Training is now being given in Signalling, Small Arms, Woodcraft, Fieldcraft, Air Raid Precautions and Knots and Lashes, Internal Combustion Engines will be taken up at a future date.

A Cadet Band, under the direction of R. Crutchley, is showing promise of becoming an excellent addition to the corps, Mr. J. Pearson is again giving valuable time instructing the boys.

The school also boasts a Girl Cadet Corps, which is not connected with either the Army or Air Cadets, although training is more or less along the army lines. The girls under Parade Lieut. J. Munro have just been formed into a corps this year and so far have shown themselves quite efficient. Uniforms have been decided on but haven't been received yet.

Junior Red Cross .. .

The High School Junior Red Cross is planning another Moccasin Dance this year. It will take place in the Arena on Friday, February 4th. This idea of dancing on a sheet of ice proved very popular with the public last year and a large turnout is expected. Entire proceeds are for the Red Cross.

Kimberley medical clinic open May 24th marked the official opening of the Kimberley Medical Clinic. Dr. S. Siegel has arrived in Kimberley, thus completing the staff. He is a specialist in children's diseases and obstetrics and will do that work for the clinic. Drs. Tedford and O'Callaghan together will do the surgery and medicine. Mrs. Gauchey has been appointed as surgical nurse.

Dr. Siegel graduated with high honors in obstetrics from Dalhousie Medical College and has spent several years in the States doing post-graduate work in this and children's diseases.

Dr. Siegel joined the R.C.A.M.C. early in the war and served for one and a half years as captain. He was honorably discharged. Since then he has been in charge of the Children's Ward, Vancouver General Hospital.

Although it may be somewhat new to some of us, the modern clinic plan of practising medicine is recognized throughout the world as the very finest possible system. It insures the maximum in service to every man, woman and child. Dr. Tedford is to be congratulated upon his enterprise and excellent choice of coworkers.

Kimberley's new auto court is ultra modern

Next Sunday, June 3rd will be a red letter day in Kimberley's history. It will mark the opening of the city's first Tourist Court, and place Kimberley on an equal footing with other progressive cities that cater to the rich tourist trade.

"Sylvia Auto Court" is the name of Kimberley's pioneer Tourist Court, and is owned and operated by Mr. Frank M. Shaw of the Selkirk Motors Ltd., to whom a great deal of credit is due in bringing to fruition a project that has been discussed, but never acted upon, for many years.

The Sylvia Auto Court will fill a long-felt want in our city. Up to six apartments have already been placed for tourists to stay and they were forced to continue their journey against their wish.

It is located on Ross Street adjacent to the Selkirk Motors garage, and is only a few blocks distant from the centre of the business section of the city.

Construction work was handled by the well-known local contracting firm. The Fabro Building & Supply Co., Ltd.
